What a Palo Alto chimney visit actually looks like
We start at the firebox, not the roof. Drop cloths down, then a smoke-shelf and damper check. A camera goes up the flue on a rod. On a Professorville Craftsman that camera usually finds bare brick. Unlined, single-wythe, mortar joints washed out by a century. Then we go up top. Crown, wash, flashing, spark arrestor. Findings get photographed and shown to you before anything is quoted.
Old Palo Alto and the streets near Ramona have Spanish Revival stacks with decorative caps. Those caps hide diagonal seismic cracking. Loma Prieta shook a lot of these, and some were patched cosmetically afterward. A step crack running through the shoulder is a Level 2 conversation, not a sweep.
Eichlers are a different animal. Greenmeadow, Fairmeadow and the Charleston tracts pair flat roofs with low freestanding or masonry hearths. Water rarely enters the flue on these. It enters at the roof penetration where the membrane meets the chase. Interior stains near the hearth almost always trace back there.
Baylands fog keeps winter humidity high here. Damp masonry plus old soot means odor even with no fire burning. Plenty of fireboxes were converted to gas decades ago, then left to fill with dust and pet hair behind the logs.

- My house in Professorville is from the 1920s and the chimney has never been lined. Is it still safe to burn in?
Not until it's been looked at, honestly. A lot of the original brick chimneys in Professorville and Old Palo Alto were built as single-wythe or unlined flues, which was normal practice then but leaves only one layer of masonry between the fire and the framing. Century-old mortar joints are often eroded, and we frequently find seismic cracking running through the stack from decades of ground movement. We inspect the flue with a camera before saying anything about whether it's usable, and if it isn't, lining is the usual path forward rather than tearing into original brick.
- We have an Eichler in Greenmeadow with the low open hearth. Do you actually work on those?
Yes. The freestanding and low masonry hearths in the Greenmeadow, Fairmeadow and Charleston tracts need a different approach than a standard fireplace with a deep firebox and a set of doors. There's less enclosure, the flue run is usually short, and access is from a flat roof rather than a pitched one. The other thing we always check on an Eichler is the flashing where the chimney penetrates the flat roof, since that's where water gets in and it shows up as staining on the interior ceiling long before anyone connects it to the chimney.
- What goes wrong most often on Palo Alto chimneys?
Four things come up again and again. Unlined or barely-lined century-old flues on the north valley floor. Spalled, crumbling brick in the section above the roofline, which the damp winter fog off the baylands accelerates because the brick stays wet and the moisture works into the face. Seismic cracking through older masonry. And flat-roof flashing leaks around Eichler chimney penetrations. We also see a lot of fireboxes that were converted to gas years ago and then largely ignored, so the logs and burner are coated in household dust and the flue hasn't been checked in a long while.
- How soon can you get out here?
Through spring and summer we can usually schedule within a few days. Once the first cold, foggy stretch arrives and everyone tries their fireplace at once, the calendar tightens considerably and it's more like a week or two out. If you're smelling smoke in the room, seeing water stains near a chimney penetration, or noticed brick fragments in the yard after a wind event, tell us that when you call and we'll try to move you up.
- Can you do it same day if I call in the morning?
Sometimes, if there's a cancellation or we already have a truck working nearby in the same part of town. It's more likely off-season than in December. One thing worth knowing about the older north Palo Alto homes: if we open up a century-old unlined flue and find cracking or deteriorated mortar, a straightforward sweep turns into an inspection and a conversation, and we'd rather book that with enough time than rush it. Same-day is realistic for a routine cleaning on a chimney we've seen before.
