What has to happen before a gas insert goes in

Can a gas insert just drop into the old firebox? Sometimes, but the chimney above it decides. San Jose has plenty of open masonry fireplaces with clay tile liners, plus unlined brick chimneys in pre-1940 homes. A sealed direct-vent unit needs its own path. That usually means a stainless liner run top to bottom, sized to the appliance, not to the old flue. Dropping an insert into an oversized unlined flue is a common shortcut we find and correct.

Prefab boxes are a different job. The factory-built metal fireboxes with Class A chase chimneys in 1975-2000 subdivisions are listed assemblies. Mixing brands voids the listing. If the chase cover is pooling water and rusting through, that gets replaced during the install, not after.

Before install day we open the damper area and check the smoke chamber parging. We also look at the crown. Cracked or missing crowns and rusted rain caps let winter rain into the flue. Old bird and rodent nests come out first. Gas venting also needs the gas line routed and pressure checked. A permit goes through the City of San Jose.
