What has to happen behind the insert before it can run
Can an insert just slide into the existing fireplace? Rarely, not as-is. An insert is a sealed appliance. It needs its own vent path, usually a stainless liner run from the insert collar to the top of the stack. Dropping a gas insert into an old clay tile flue and calling it done is the most common defect we find later. Improperly sized or unlined flues after a gas insert installation cause spillage and staining.
Masonry and prefab are different jobs. Open masonry fireplaces with clay tile liners give you room to work, but the smoke chamber and damper frame often have to be modified to pass a liner. Unlined brick chimneys in pre-1940 San Jose homes may need the crown rebuilt first. Factory-built prefab metal fireboxes in 1975-2000 subdivisions only accept inserts listed for that specific firebox model, and the chase cover above usually needs attention at the same time.
Check these things yourself before you shop. Does the damper move? Is the crown cracked? Is there a rain cap? Any of those failing means water is already in the system, and water plus a new liner is a bad combination.
The chimney condition drives the work, not the appliance. A short straight flue with a sound crown is simple. An offset stack with parging failure and separated mortar joints is not, and we will say so before ordering anything.
