What a chimney cap replacement actually involves

The job starts on the roof, not the driveway. We measure the outside dimensions of the clay flue tile, plus how far it stands proud of the crown. The old cap comes off next. On masonry stacks it is usually a rusted mild-steel arrestor with seized screws, so the band gets cut. The tile lip is wire-brushed clean. The new stainless cap slides over the tile and tightens on set screws. Crown-mount versions get anchors and sealant instead.

Prefab chimneys are a different animal. In 1975-2000 subdivisions the "cap" is really the chase cover, a sheet-metal lid over a Class A pipe. Flat galvanized covers pool water at the center and rust through from the top down. The replacement is measured on site, fabricated off-site in stainless, and formed with a cross-break so water sheds and a drip edge so it does not run down the siding.

Cap size is only half the decision. A cracked crown under a new cap still leaks during atmospheric-river storms. Earthquake cracking above the roofline shows up the same way. Tile roofs slow access and add fabrication time.

Sealed direct-vent gas inserts terminate their own way. Those do not take a rain cap at all.
