Why the pilot drops out and the glass hazes over

Two symptoms send most calls. The pilot lights, then dies in seconds. Or the glass fogs gray and won't wipe clean. Both are maintenance issues, not failures. A thermocouple or thermopile builds oxide on the tip. Millivolt output falls. The valve reads that as no flame and shuts. Cleaning the tip and reseating it often restores the signal. Spider webbing in the pilot orifice is the other common culprit. Spiders are drawn to the odorant in natural gas.

The haze is different. It is a sulfur and silica film baking onto the inside of the direct-vent glass. It needs a fireplace glass cleaner, not household spray. Ammonia etches the coating. While the glass is out, the rope gasket gets checked. A crushed or missing gasket breaks the sealed combustion loop.

Log position matters more than people expect. Ceramic logs sit to a manufacturer diagram. Move one over a burner port and you get carbon soot and black tips. The firebox ends up sooted too. Ember chips migrate into ports the same way.

Local specifics: gas log conversions in old masonry flues need the damper clamped open, and inserts dropped into unlined pre-1940 brick chimneys without a stainless liner will keep failing inspection. On 1975-2000 prefab units, a rusted chase cover drips into the firebox from above.
